WATER

A FILM BY DEEPA MEHTA

Deepa Mehta has done it again. The woman with the golden touch has created her third film, “Water” in a highly anticipated series of four films.

Water looks back to the late 1930’s and takes us on a journey to glimpse the lives of widows living in a period when India was fighting for independence against British colonial rule

This film is a testament to all those women who after the deaths of their husband had to endure enormous hardships such as being sent to a home for widows and being ostracized by the very society they had once belonged to.

Water follows the journey of a little girl named, Chuiya whose husband, a very elderly and sickly man dies soon after marrying her. Chuiya is then taken to a home for widows by her parents; two people she trusted more than anything in the world. Life in her new home is very unpleasant. Living conditions and sanitation are poor; money and food are scarce; and the company of other widows is all that she has.

Chuiya befriends a young widow named Kalyani. She is also a widow who falls in love with a man. Kalyani’s struggle to be with her lover by breaking the cultural norms that bind her to the society she lives in is fascinating to watch. The vibrancy of the Indian culture and the contrasting hypocritical behaviors and attitudes of the society will keep audiences spellbound.

Water is a thought-provoking movie that will make you question the very society you live in. Widows are humans at the end of the day. They have feelings and desires just like the rest of us. Why do we treat them differently?
