Talvin Singh
Labelled as one of the masterminds of the Asian underground music sensation that has spread throughout the world, Talvin Singh made a quiet entrance in to New Zealand for shows in Auckland and Wellington.
Before surrendering ourselves to the fusion of East and West music, I decided to do a little research in to the phenomenon that is Talvin Singh |
|
From a very young age, Talvin Singh embraced music like nothing before. Born and bred in England, Talvin started playing the tabla at the age of 5. His love for drum ‘n’ bass electronica combined with his classical training in tabla lead him to become the founder of Anokha, a club-night at East London’s Blue Note. He is notably one of the most talented musicians around and his innovative fusion of Indian bhangra music and drum ‘n’ bass electronica have made him a sough after talent.
Talvin has performed with numerous artists, from Bjork to Madonna. He has developed his own unique powerful sound using the tablatronic, which is a set of tablas adapted for live use with a rack of
electronic equipment from samplers, sequencers to effects. |

Talvin’s performance in Auckland was eagerly awaited by a very diverse crowd, that included not only Indians but a variety of ethnicities – mainly British, I might add. The show was slow to start, but Talvin did not leave fans disappointed. Like his Wellington show, he performed numbers from his upcoming album and delighted fans with old favourites.
Crowds of people gathered near the mixers as Talvin belted out one number after another. The smokey, hazy feel of the Studio, combined with waves of dancing bodies created a club-like atmosphere that was very hypnotising. Talvin’s live performance is a show not to be missed. |
