Allah made me funny

The Official Muslim Comedy Tour

“Allah made me funny” – a phrase one does not normally hear but a trio of fast becoming legends have made this phrase their comedy act and have been performing to full houses all around the world.

Post 9/11; post war on Iraq; and post all things anti-Muslim, a team of comedians have taken it upon themselves to inform the world around them of the beauty, the ordinariness and passivity of Muslims in a comedic manner.

Azhar Usman, a lawyer by trade and an up and coming comedian teamed up with Preacher Moss, a well known comedian and writer for the George Lopez show and Daman Wayans have formed a basic business plan of making people laugh and educating them on the ways of the Islamic people by showing them a lighter side of Muslims, who are at the end of the day ordinary people, living ordinary lives.

“The concept of the tour is to make a comprehensive effort to provide effective, significant, and appropriate comedy with an Islamic perspective which is both mainstream and cross-cultural.  The idea is to provide a venue whereby Muslims and non-Muslims can feel safe, relevant, and inclusive of an experience where humour is used to bridge gaps of bias, intolerance, and other social ills that are pre and post 9/11 relevant,” says Preacher Moss.

The purpose of the tour is not only to educate people about the truths of Muslims but to entertain them with the lighter side of humanity.

Allah made me funny was the best two hours I have spent in a long time.  The comedy show not only made my sides ache with laughter but it left me craving for more.  Azhar Usman and Preacher Moss both showed us that even though they are born and bred in the United States of America the arms of racial prejudice are not far behind.  Through comedic dialogues they took us on a journey of their life as American Muslims living in a world post 9/11.

Azhar Usman is an American born Muslim to Indian parents.  He enraptured Indian members of the audience with references to the inability of Indians to differentiate between the letter ‘V’ and the letter ‘W’ and expressed his puzzlement that the phrase, ‘brother in law’ was a bad word in India and Pakistan.

Preacher Moss is an African American who is married to a Muslim woman from Hyderabad.  His account of his first meeting with his In-laws is like a scene from a Bollywood movie - Girl meets Boy; fall in love; family disapprove but eventually marry.  The expression of disbelief and the instant dislike by his In-laws kept the audience laughing.  His one and only companion in the entire house was his Grandmother in-law – a woman who could not speak nor understand a word of English!

Allah made me funny is a must see for all.  Many of us have a certain prejudice against the people of Islam especially after 9/11 and the media’s portrayal of Muslim activities and mind set.  Allah made me funny teaches us that it doesn’t matter what religion a person practices – at the end of the day we are all children of God and humor is the one thing that connects us all.
