Adhura Sapna – unfulfilled dream

Sambhu a former public servant is determined to fulfil the dream of his grandfather who had arrived in Fiji in the late 1890s to work in the sugarcane plantation. His father had passed on the message that his grandfather always wanted to be very successful as a farmer and never leave the farm which he purchased during the indenture system. After having gone through difficult times in India and during the “Girmit” period he had vowed to succeed in his farm one day.

However Sambhu’s newly wedded wife Minla had other ideas and his dreams conflicted with her own. She is dreaming of a comfortable city life and is insisting on migrating to Canada after having heard of all good stories from some relatives. She desperately tries to convince Sambhu that life on the farm is a struggle that will never end. Sambhu on the other hand is of the view that it is not as easy as it seems in foreign countries and the stories from migrated Fiji Indians never tell about the hardships.

Sambhu’s determination to be successful on the farm is dealt a bad blow when there is a series of thefts on his farm and his favourite cow is stolen. Everyone close to Sambhu points a finger at Jona a native Fijian from the nearby village who happen to be the traditional landowners. Jona who has been a close friend and kava drinking mate of Sambhu denies the allegation and tries to clear his name by assisting in finding the real culprit.

To make matters worse Sambhu receives a notice from the Native Land Trust Board that his expiring land lease would not be renewed due to a project being planned for native Fijians. He is devastated by the news and tries to use Jona in helping him out of this. Minla is very frustrated when she sees that he is not giving up his futile dream of farming despite all the problems.

Minla decides to take matters in her own hands and befriends Jalil a neighbour’s son who has good contacts in The Canadian embassy. Minla seduces him in her bid to obtain visas for migration and their secretive meetings have been noticed by some villagers. In the meantime Sambhu is busy trying every possible way to get the land lease extended and Minla gets closer to Jalil. Sambhu is very upset with Minla and is looking for an opportunity to catch them.

Sambhu is devastated by everything that is happening in his life and starts hating everyone around him. Jona on the other hand maintains his friendship and tries to help Sambhu.

Experience the hardships of life in Fiji as a young man determined to fulfil the dreams of his grandfather takes you on journey.  Adhura Sapna opens in selected cinemas from June 7.
